Phil Costley Cross Country Shield Shared

The Phil Costley Shield, the symbol of Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Cross Country supremacy, was shared between the Canterbury and Wellington Regional teams at Hanmer Springs on Thursday. Over 275 Year 5 to 8 school children from Canterbury, Tasman and Wellington took part in sunny and windy conditions with a backdrop of snow covered hills in the sixth Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships (IRXC). Canterbury, who had wrestled the shared shield from Wellington in Nelson in 2009, were dominant in the Year 7 age groups, due to having Athletics New Zealand 2010 Cross country champion, Ari Graham (no.704) , winning the girls’ race and Angus Bailey (no.752), winning his third IRXC title in a row in the boys. Wellington’s strength was in the Year 8 age groups. IRXC 2007 winner Kelsey Forman, led in four of her team mates for a clean sweep in the girl’s race. With one race to go over the very testing 1.1km course, the shield lay in the balance with Wellington trailing by one point. The final race of the day saw IRXC history being made when Wellington’s Noah Billingsley took out his fourth Inter-Regional title in a row after a competitive race with Tasman’s Sam Mackay-Wright and Canterbury’s Fergus Eglesfield. Billingsley’s victory ensured a win for his team and the shield would be shared for the second time.

The closest race of the day was in the Year 5 Girls’ race where Canterbury’s Georgia Stroud, daughter of Canterbury Tactix Coach, Helen Mahon-Stroud, out sprinted her team and school mate, Mya Graham, on the line, to win by 0.38 seconds. Tasman were very competitive in the younger age groups, winning two team silver medals. They also won their first IRXC title for two years when Nelson’s Ben Hamer dominated the Year 6 boys’ race.

World Schools’ Cross Country Champion, Margot Gibson and New Zealand running legend, Phil Costley, whom the shield is named after, presented the Shield and Medals.

Phil Costley Shield Shared (again)

Phil Costley with the shared Shield named after him

The Phil Costley Shield is off to Wellington....but only for six months....as both Wellington and Canterbury have shared it after the IRXC2010 in Hanmer Springs on Thursday 23 September.

Wellington's strength in the Year 8 events secured the shared result after the Primary Sports Canterbury team took a strong hold after super runs from both the Canterbury Year 7 teams.

Canterbury were the holders of the Phil Costley Shield from the 2009 competition in Nelson after sharing it with Wellington in 2008.

PSC CC Team News 8.9.10

Hi everyone
Well, what a few days we have had! Some important news below with Sunday being cancelled the main news. Children now need to make 6 out of the 8 official sessions as listed previously.

Below, there is also some information about some races this Saturday and the Maryland's relay also as well as info. about our next training session on next Thursday, 16 September...and birthday boy Rainer wins GOLD...

Thanks to everyone who has sent in Cabin requests and Bio. info.

1. OMAKA CANCELLED THIS SUNDAY
I have been contacted by the Omaka Scout Camp and they say that we are not able to use their premises on Sunday due to problems associated with the Earthquake. We will therefore cancel the event planned for this Sunday. Sorry if this disrupts your plans. I have looked at alternate venues but places like Roto Kohatu and Halswell Quarry are not open either with Roto Kohatu especially in bad condition - look at link below from Dave Holland from CHA, if you are interested.
"We had a walk round Rotokohatu today - amazing. Pictures here; http://picasaweb.google.com/110316155414548875921/RotokohatuAfterEarthquake. The whole side of the lake has slipped so that the trees that were on the bank are now about 30-40m into the lake."

2. CONGRATULATIONS TO RAINER!.
..a report just through from his mum.......
"We have a little extra
information hot off the press for Rainer’s profile details, (if it’s not too late, I know we’re past the deadline). He has just competed in the NZCT AIMS Games Multisport event and he came 1st. Yeha! We are very proud of him. He came out of the kayaking section third to last, (something we should work on!), then made it up in a massive effort in the mountain biking, and a tactical and fast run to finish off in first place. A great Birthday Bonus for his birthday today!"

3. MORE CANCELLATIONS.....if you are involved these events have been cancelled/postponed
- SCHOOLS' ORIENTEERING this weekend 11 and 12 September (Saturday at Halswell and Sunday at Woodend) has been postponed to an unknown date......
- TAKAHE to AKAROA Relay (maybe some parents/older siblings) on Saturday 18 September has been cancelled and may be replaced by some road race of some sort...

4. WELLINGTON and NELSON ARE VERY KEEN! Alison and the Wellington team are thinking of us all here in Canterbury as they gear up to take back the shield (yeah right!)...I received an email from them yesterday and they will have 3 bus loads of runners flying down then coming to Hanmer! Nelson athletes had a special IRXC trial race for their team last Saturday at Saxton Field (last year's venue for the IRXC09) and their coach says they are looking good!

5. RACES THIS SATURDAY 11 SEPTEMBER.... with the cancellation of the NZ Road Champs and now Omaka we need some races to help us get "race fit" so our bodies are ready to race hard in two weeks time...there are still two opportunities this Saturday to get in a race...so if you can make them, please try to get there...even if they are on the Road they still will be good opportunities to practice your race routine and try out some race tactics...will let you know if they are cancelled or have venue changes.....

1. North Canterbury Road Champs (with Papanui Toc-H, New Brighton, Port Hills and Rovers Clubs invited).
Venue: Nth Canty. Clubrooms, AMI Centre, East Belt, Rangiora (opposite Rangiora Highschool)
2.00pm B/G Under 10 2km
2.10pm B/G Under 12 and 14 3km
For more details and course map see:

Final details

2. Christchurch Avon Road Champs
CHA Club Road Championships - North Hagley Park, 11.9.10
Meet 1.45pm at Corner Deans Ave and Riccarton Ave (opposite Riccarton Road) for a mass start at 2.30pm. Grade B/G10 and Under 2km, Grade B11-13 and Grade G11-14 3km, Grade W15+ and M14+ 5km.

6. NEXT TRAINING: 4.30pm-5.15pm THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER HALSWELL QUARRY: (If the Quarry is still closed I will advise as soon as I can of an alternate venue)

This will now be an important event and we will have races...so you can get ready...so the day will be as follows:
4.30pm SHARP Meet and greet - PSC Booklets will be handed out with Biography Details of team members, Itinerary, Gear List, Transport list, Sleeping arrangements and other details
4.35pm Teams do their own warm up over 1km lap
4.45pm Year 5 (and under) and Year 6 Race - Boys and Girls 2km (2 laps)
4.55pm Year 7 and 8 Race 3km (3 laps)
5.10pm Warm Down
Please try to make it to this event. IT DOESN'T MATTER where you come in this race but use it as a practice for a week later -ie prepare for it in the same way with no food for 3 hours, warm up etc. and wear shoes and gear you will at Hanmer. Try your race tactics out etc.

Another event that would be ideal to attend as a lead up to 23 September is......

7. SUNDAY 19 September: Marylands Children's Relay 19.9.10 (Not an official PSC Training event but well worth having a go!))
Everyone is invited to run in this 4 x 1km relay at 1.00pm at Marylands Reserve. No need to be with a running club and it is all on grass and a great opportunity for a blow out over 1km with your spikes before resting up.

If you would like to run (and are not already running in a club team), please fill in the below form by SUNDAY 12 SEPTEMBER - anyone can run, no need to be registered or a club member. I will put you in a team. See this form:

CHILDREN'S RELAY ENTRY FORM SUNDAY 19.9.10

That's all for now. Do keep safe and do try to get out for a run if you can but I understand if you can't. Attached is a photo of part of Castle Rock that fell off on Saturday morning...I ran past it yesterday and it is huge..glad it didn't come down any further towards my house!

See some of you on Saturday or next Thursday.

Paul:)
