Phil Costley Shield Returns to Canterbury

The Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country team has won the Phil Costley Shield for 2009 to claim bragging rights as the top Cross Country region for Primary and Intermediate school runners. In 2008 they had shared the shield with the strong Primary Sport Wellington team.

Over 100 of Canterbury’s top junior cross country runners went head to head with the best from Tasman (Nelson and Marlborough) and Wellington in the Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships for Primary and Intermediate schools at Saxton Field, Nelson, on Thursday.

The 344 young competitors were severely tested by a wet and slippery course and wintry weather conditions but some excellent performances were recorded with a large number of Canterbury athletes making it onto the podium.

The Year 5 girls’ race set the tone for what was to follow for much of the day with Canterbury runners well to the fore and taking the first four individual spots for an unassailable team total of 10 points. Harriet Bush (Cheviot Area School) led in Alice King (Loburn), Lorna Pairman (Cashmere) and Lucy Turner (Prebbleton).

The second race (Year 5 boys) saw Zander Wager (Prebbleton) have a brilliant sprint finish to take the silver medal and lead Canterbury to their second teams’ title out of two.

The Year 6 girls’ race turned into another Canterbury benefit, once again with the first four across the line. Georgia Freeman (Our Lady of Victories) captured her second Inter-Regional title, heading in Jesse Anderson (Weedons), Saskia Lane (Fernside) and Julie Briden (West Eyreton).

To complete its domination of the primary school grades Canterbury produced the same result in the Year 6 boys’ race. Greenpark School’s Angus Bailey dominated the race to win his second consecutive title. Second was William Boyd (Westburn), with Tom Moulai third (Paparoa Street) ahead of Declan O’Neill (Hampstead Shool, Ashburton).

Runners from the Wellington region became more prominent in the Intermediate grades, taking all four individual gold medals, but their teams were unable to match Canterbury's strength in depth with the red and blacks stealing another three team titles.

A superbly-paced run from Libby Vincent (Westburn) saw her claim a well-deserved bronze in the Year 7 girls’ race, which helped her team to Canterbury’s fifth out of five team titles so far.

In the Year 7 boys’ race, well performed Middleton Grange athlete, Caleb Stamper, was the first Canterbury runner home in 5th place with the Canterbury team taking their only silver teams’ medal of the day. Wellington’s Noah Billingsley won the race to claim a record three inter-regional titles in a row.

Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country Team Captain, Zoe Ladd (Cust), never allowed the Year 8 girls race leaders to break away and with one lap of the 2.7km course remaining she was still challenging for the top three.

However, experienced Wellington runner Bridget Kiddle was able to pull away on the final hill climb leaving Ladd to claim fourth just behind South Island champion, Claire Erasmus of Tasman and two-time inter-regional champion Holly White, of Wellington. Nevertheless, Ladd’s performance helped Canterbury to another team gold.

The final race of the day saw local favourite Josh Barry (Nelson Intermediate) attempt to claim three inter-regional titles in a row also, and with smart tactical running taking him into the lead with 200m to go he looked likely to succeed only to be surprised by the home straight finishing pace of Wellington's Fletcher Greaves. Ben Oliver (Ashgrove) was just behind the first two to claim individual bronze for Canterbury. Again Canterbury took the team gold.

In the overall competition for the top region, Canterbury convincingly reclaimed the Phil Costley Shield (23 pts) ahead of Wellington (17 pts) and Tasman (8 pts).

More Aims Games Unofficial Results

Caleb Stamper has won a Bronze at the Aims Games in the Year 7 Boys' race in a field of 75. He ran the 3km in 10.52, faster than last year's winning time. We think Corey Taylor was about 10th in the same race with Thomas Harford 22nd (Thomas has just been added to our team as Sam Lees has pulled out due to representative commitments).

Olivia Maisey was 11th in the Year 8 girls' race of 71 runners, just a few seconds behind Lucy Allison who was 9th or 10th. We think Jake Marryatt was about 20th in the Year 8 Boys' race (Daniel Coats 5th, Nick Findlay 11th, Sean Eustace 17th).

Well done everyone...official results to come.

Bronze for Caleb at Aims Games

Well done to Caleb Stamper for winning a Bronze in the Year 7 Boys' event at the Aims Games Cross Country. Caleb ran the 3km in 10.52 (faster than last year's winning time) to take third in a field of 75. Also in the race, Thomas Harford, of Cobham was 22nd. Thomas is our latest team member as Sam Lees has pulled out of the team due to other representative commitments.

Silver for Cobham Y8 Boys at Aims Games

News through this morning that the Cobham Year 8 Boys - all PSC CC Team members, took the Silver Medal in the Teams' race at the Aims Games Cross Country this morning in Tauranga. Daniel Coats (5th), Nick Findlay (11th) and Sean Eustace (17th) were the team that won the Silver.

Fast Racing at Roto Kohatu

Paul's rough guide to racing yesterday...(sorry for errors)
The team looked great at Roto Kohatu on Saturday in lovely spring conditions. Everyone looked in good form or were running themselves into form in the four races over the challenging course.

Current IRXC Champion Georgia Freeman looked all class to lead in the Year 5/6 girls in 7.42 ahead of Dominique Heath and Jessie Anderson with first Year 5 being Alice King ahead of Lorna Pairman in 8.20 approx.

Also looking in good form was current IRXC Champion Angus Bailey leading in Tom Moulai (who had played rugby in the morning) in the Year 6 Boys in 7.12 approx. Zander Wager continued his good recent form to head in the Year 5 boys in 7.40 approx. ahead of Year 5 Captain Chris Dryden who showed the advantages of a season's racing (he qualified 10th in the original team).

The Year 7/8 Girls' were lead in by impressive Year 7 Frances Daley with Kate Meynell heading the year 8 Girls' with Natalie Dryden second Year 7 ahead of a big bunch including Year 8 Captain Zoe Ladd.

The final race of the day was a small field of Year 7/8 Boys' as many are running in Tauranga tomorrow at the AIMS Games Cross Country. Nevertheless, after 10minutes 42 approx. Year 8 Captain, Ben Oliver, just headed in Year 9 guest, Matt Dryden. Second Year 8 was Guy Greenslade with Fergus Eglesfield first Year 7 ahead of a fast finishing Cameron Avery.

It was great to see some family members and others having a go over a hilly and challenging course. Bring on the water of Omaka next Sunday afternoon!

PSC CC Team News 3.9.09

Hi guys
1. Today: Great to see a near 100% turnout tonight apart from a few Cobham guys skiing. You all looked pretty good doing your 1km efforts with Phil Costley having to work hard to catch you all - except Year 8 Captain Ben Oliver who was paired with his brother, last years' Year 8 Captain - Craig. Thanks to Craig Fairhall and Jock Spain for manning the road before and after the river run today and to Craig Eustace for tidying up at the end.

2. Polos: Hopefully you all got your Polo Shirts from your manager. Somehow we have misplaced Josh Primmers' one - a size 14 - if you see it please email this address - that applies to Managers who may have it in their bag. Thanks to Amanda Ladd for bagging up all the Polos and also arranging all the other uniform orders - that is a huge job.

3. Lost Property: I picked up two jackets and a polo after the run today - come and get them from "Barny" (my car) on Saturday at Roto Kohatu.

4. Races this Saturday - 5 September: With less than three weeks to go to the IRXC09 (Inter Regional Cross Country 2009) it is important to get what is called "race fit" - to experience the pain and pleasure of racing hard. That is why our 8th/10 official training session is a race this Saturday, 5 September at Roto Kohatu Reserve, at the end of Sawyers Arms Road (airport end), off Johns Road. This is where we had our first training session in Week 2 of this term. Anyone is welcome to race - family, friends, clubmates etc. No need to enter or entry fee.
Meet 1.30pm for a warm up before starts at:
2.00pm Year 5/6 Girls and below - 2km
2.15pm Year 5/6 Boys and below - 2km
2.30pm Year 7/8 Girls and above - 3km
2.45pm Year 7/8 Boys and above - 3km
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE YOU COME in these races and as Phil said, experiment with what to eat/drink beforehand, with race tactics etc. Maybe try a fast start or slow start, try sprinting 100-150m at the start or go slow for the first lap or lead! We will not record results or times, but you might like to! The main aim is for you to run your race distance at race pace over a tough Cross Country course - ENJOY!
PS If anyone is able to get there at 1.00pm approx. to help me set up it would be appreciated.

5. Next Training Run: There is NO combined run next week (but do train of course - some faster stuff now as in your programme and it is almost "taper" time - ie easing off on the longer runs.
OMAKA - SUNDAY 13 September PSC CC Team 3/4 Distance RACES - please bring a gold coin per person as we pay the Scout Camp for use of the facilities

2.00pm Omaka Scout Camp, Greywacke Road off Johns Road, Harewood. Please bring some afternoon tea to share, families welcome. Bring: your family, Canterbury Singlet, spikes (if you have them), change of socks/shoes - they will get wet as we cross a river!, some afternoon tea to share,
The approx. programme for the day is:
2.00pm: Meet and greet
2.15pm: Warm up over the course
2.25pm: Year 5/6 Girls 1.5km Race
2.35pm: Year 5/6 Boys 1.5km Race
2.45pm: Year 7/8 Girls 2.25km Race
2.55pm: Year 7/8 Boys 2.25km Race
3.15pm: Afternoon Tea
3.45pmish Finish
Remember your singlet! Shoes will get wet! Bring the family.

5. Consent/Medical/ Principal Permission forms and Fees
Please bring any remaining consent forms and fees to Woodend/Port Hills/ Barnett Park so we can get out a phone/address/email list to you so you can pool transport etc. Your details will only appear on this list if you have filled in the consent form. We also needed signed permission from your principal (and ask them for financial support too at the same time!).

6. Photos
David Eglesfield david_louise@xtra.co.nz has probably already sent you a link to his Snap fish albums where you can order his excellent photos of our runs and races. If he hasn't, email him. If you do not want photos on our blog page, please email me and I will do the best I can to make sure they don't appear. What super shots from Roto Kohatu - some of them are on a slideshow on our blog.

7. Lost Property
There has been a Polo Shirt lost from the first meeting on Tuesday 21 July taht was used for sizing. It was a size 10 and belongs to Hamish Findlay. If you have it please email Ann-Marie

That's about it now. Just remember you should be tired by the tough training you are doing now - so don't be disappointed if your racing isn't producing results - training now takes effect 4-5 weeks later!

See you Wednesday at Woodend Domain.

Hi everyone
Hope you are all enjoying the good run of weather - no excuse to not get out training!
1. Training @ Roto Kohatu: 4.30-5.15pm Monday 27 July
A reminder that our first team training session is on tomorrow- Monday 27 July. Please meet by 4.30pm at ROTO KOHATU RESERVE - airport end of Sawyers Arms Rd., Harewood. There are no facilities (ie toilets, water etc.) there you should be able to drive in (if I get the key) or just park on Sawyers Arms road. If open - come up to the Christchurch Avon tent. The raining is tough and all on grass with hills too! Spikes can be worn if you want.
Location Map of Roto Kohatu - look at the top of ther map
2. Next training run: 4.30pm Wednesday 5 August Woodend Domain
3. Optional Uniform Orders: Close tomorrow, 27 July
Amanda Ladd grant.ladd@xtra.co.nz is arranging our optional uniform orders (Training Jackets and Shorts). She wants to send the order away as soon as she can so you can get them back as soon as possible. Please bring any remaining orders and money tomorrow to Roto Kohatu - she will have sizes to try on. No Polo shirts, Jackets or Shorts will be given out till money is received.
4. New Zealand Cross Country Champs: Saturday 1 August - Halswell Quarry
Entries for the champs have closed and lots of the older PSC CC Team members are entered (and lots of past members). Please wear your club singlets if you are in the Grade 12 or Grade 14 NZ Champs races. If you are in Grade 10 or below (ie 10 at 31/12/09, or under) anyone can run in a 1.5km FUN RUN at 3.10pm - wear your CANTERBURY SINGLET (unless your club wants you to wear a club singlet). Spikes may be worn. The run is $2 and the entries are taken on the day and non club runners can run. I presume the course will be without the big hill - see the course map. For race details, course map, list of entrants, timetable etc. see: http://www.athletics.org.nz/article.aspx?ID=3849&Mode=1
5. Consent/Medical/ Principal Permission forms
Please bring any remaining consent forms so we can get out a phone/address/email list to you so you can pool transport etc. Your details will only appear on this list if you have filled in the consent form. We also needed signed permission from your principal (and ask them for financial support too at the same time!).

That's enough info. for now. It is now less than 2 months till the IRXC09! Training now is vital. It gives you an aerobic base of kms/time to draw on later - get out as much as you can. Warning - training at this stage could make you tired- get lots of rest and good nutrition.

See you Monday at Roto Kohatu.
Paul and team.

Hi new team members and well done on your race today. If you have been selected in the PSC CC Team for 2009 please fill out the Application Form by clicking on the link to your right. Please do this by WEDNESDAY 8 JULY. If it is not done by that date we will start contacting reserves.

Congratulations again on a superb performance! We believe it is the HARDEST representative team in Canterbury to make! A reminder we need Team Captains and Team Managers also - see the Application form and the notes on your selection letter.

PSC CC Team News 5.6.09

Hi guys
Only 12 days till the Year 5 and Year 6 2009 PSC CC Team is selected! Also, the day of the next step for Year 7/8 selection too! Hope you are all keen and planning to make the team again!

As the selector and coach, I need to know well beforehand if anyone is going to be away on June 17th or July 1st (Year 7 and 8 Intermediates v. Primaries). I can only select someone who is not at these events if they let me know and have shown good form - so let me know. I can even ask people to run in these events if for sickness/medical reasons they have not qualified from their zones - in very special circumstances. Please let me know.

A few more things
1. Well done to those Year 9s who have been doing so well in the recent Sec. Schools' races - make sure you are entered for the NZ Sec. Schools cc in Nelson on June 20th - entries close 12 June
2. A reminder the course at Halswell is changed this year. I am taking a group over the course from Fendalton School/Christchurch Avon on Thursday 11 June at 4.30-5.15pm - anyone is welcome to join us - meet in the carpark. New course attached again.
3. Young for your year group? - Age grade- as stipulated in the PSC Handbook you have an option of running in an older year group race if this is the case for you,or you have to have your time compared to the older age grade ie I have a Year 6 boy who is in the 9 year olds race (98% of them are Year 5s) as his birthday is after 1 April - he has the option to run in the 10 years race (98%Year 6s) or wait to have his time compared. If you are in the 10 years race, and are a Year 7, if you get in the first ten on June 17th you can run over 3kms on July 1st in the Year 7 race - THIS INFO. in point 3. only applies to a very small number of children. Last year I did try to get all races changed to Year at school but was unsuccessful at a PSC executive level.
4. A few dates for the ultra organised:
Thursday 16 July: Unofficial Hanmer trip with run over the IRXC07 course (11.00am) and swim (last Thursday of the holidays)
Tuesday 21 July: First PSC Team Meeting, 7pm @ Fendalton School

1.30pm prizegiving
Friday 25 September: Coach bak to Chch. via Kaikoura for lunch.

That's all for now...keep fit, well and uninjured...see some of you on Thursday and others on June 17th.
Paul:)
