Phil Costley Cross Country Shield Shared

The Phil Costley Shield, the symbol of Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Cross Country supremacy, was shared between the Canterbury and Wellington Regional teams at Hanmer Springs on Thursday. Over 275 Year 5 to 8 school children from Canterbury, Tasman and Wellington took part in sunny and windy conditions with a backdrop of snow covered hills in the sixth Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships (IRXC). Canterbury, who had wrestled the shared shield from Wellington in Nelson in 2009, were dominant in the Year 7 age groups, due to having Athletics New Zealand 2010 Cross country champion, Ari Graham (no.704) , winning the girls’ race and Angus Bailey (no.752), winning his third IRXC title in a row in the boys. Wellington’s strength was in the Year 8 age groups. IRXC 2007 winner Kelsey Forman, led in four of her team mates for a clean sweep in the girl’s race. With one race to go over the very testing 1.1km course, the shield lay in the balance with Wellington trailing by one point. The final race of the day saw IRXC history being made when Wellington’s Noah Billingsley took out his fourth Inter-Regional title in a row after a competitive race with Tasman’s Sam Mackay-Wright and Canterbury’s Fergus Eglesfield. Billingsley’s victory ensured a win for his team and the shield would be shared for the second time.

The closest race of the day was in the Year 5 Girls’ race where Canterbury’s Georgia Stroud, daughter of Canterbury Tactix Coach, Helen Mahon-Stroud, out sprinted her team and school mate, Mya Graham, on the line, to win by 0.38 seconds. Tasman were very competitive in the younger age groups, winning two team silver medals. They also won their first IRXC title for two years when Nelson’s Ben Hamer dominated the Year 6 boys’ race.

World Schools’ Cross Country Champion, Margot Gibson and New Zealand running legend, Phil Costley, whom the shield is named after, presented the Shield and Medals.

Phil Costley Shield Shared (again)

Phil Costley with the shared Shield named after him

The Phil Costley Shield is off to Wellington....but only for six months....as both Wellington and Canterbury have shared it after the IRXC2010 in Hanmer Springs on Thursday 23 September.

Wellington's strength in the Year 8 events secured the shared result after the Primary Sports Canterbury team took a strong hold after super runs from both the Canterbury Year 7 teams.

Canterbury were the holders of the Phil Costley Shield from the 2009 competition in Nelson after sharing it with Wellington in 2008.

PSC CC Team News 8.9.10

Hi everyone
Well, what a few days we have had! Some important news below with Sunday being cancelled the main news. Children now need to make 6 out of the 8 official sessions as listed previously.

Below, there is also some information about some races this Saturday and the Maryland's relay also as well as info. about our next training session on next Thursday, 16 September...and birthday boy Rainer wins GOLD...

Thanks to everyone who has sent in Cabin requests and Bio. info.

1. OMAKA CANCELLED THIS SUNDAY
I have been contacted by the Omaka Scout Camp and they say that we are not able to use their premises on Sunday due to problems associated with the Earthquake. We will therefore cancel the event planned for this Sunday. Sorry if this disrupts your plans. I have looked at alternate venues but places like Roto Kohatu and Halswell Quarry are not open either with Roto Kohatu especially in bad condition - look at link below from Dave Holland from CHA, if you are interested.
"We had a walk round Rotokohatu today - amazing. Pictures here; http://picasaweb.google.com/110316155414548875921/RotokohatuAfterEarthquake. The whole side of the lake has slipped so that the trees that were on the bank are now about 30-40m into the lake."

2. CONGRATULATIONS TO RAINER!.
..a report just through from his mum.......
"We have a little extra
information hot off the press for Rainer’s profile details, (if it’s not too late, I know we’re past the deadline). He has just competed in the NZCT AIMS Games Multisport event and he came 1st. Yeha! We are very proud of him. He came out of the kayaking section third to last, (something we should work on!), then made it up in a massive effort in the mountain biking, and a tactical and fast run to finish off in first place. A great Birthday Bonus for his birthday today!"

3. MORE CANCELLATIONS.....if you are involved these events have been cancelled/postponed
- SCHOOLS' ORIENTEERING this weekend 11 and 12 September (Saturday at Halswell and Sunday at Woodend) has been postponed to an unknown date......
- TAKAHE to AKAROA Relay (maybe some parents/older siblings) on Saturday 18 September has been cancelled and may be replaced by some road race of some sort...

4. WELLINGTON and NELSON ARE VERY KEEN! Alison and the Wellington team are thinking of us all here in Canterbury as they gear up to take back the shield (yeah right!)...I received an email from them yesterday and they will have 3 bus loads of runners flying down then coming to Hanmer! Nelson athletes had a special IRXC trial race for their team last Saturday at Saxton Field (last year's venue for the IRXC09) and their coach says they are looking good!

5. RACES THIS SATURDAY 11 SEPTEMBER.... with the cancellation of the NZ Road Champs and now Omaka we need some races to help us get "race fit" so our bodies are ready to race hard in two weeks time...there are still two opportunities this Saturday to get in a race...so if you can make them, please try to get there...even if they are on the Road they still will be good opportunities to practice your race routine and try out some race tactics...will let you know if they are cancelled or have venue changes.....

1. North Canterbury Road Champs (with Papanui Toc-H, New Brighton, Port Hills and Rovers Clubs invited).
Venue: Nth Canty. Clubrooms, AMI Centre, East Belt, Rangiora (opposite Rangiora Highschool)
2.00pm B/G Under 10 2km
2.10pm B/G Under 12 and 14 3km
For more details and course map see:

Final details

2. Christchurch Avon Road Champs
CHA Club Road Championships - North Hagley Park, 11.9.10
Meet 1.45pm at Corner Deans Ave and Riccarton Ave (opposite Riccarton Road) for a mass start at 2.30pm. Grade B/G10 and Under 2km, Grade B11-13 and Grade G11-14 3km, Grade W15+ and M14+ 5km.

6. NEXT TRAINING: 4.30pm-5.15pm THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER HALSWELL QUARRY: (If the Quarry is still closed I will advise as soon as I can of an alternate venue)

This will now be an important event and we will have races...so you can get ready...so the day will be as follows:
4.30pm SHARP Meet and greet - PSC Booklets will be handed out with Biography Details of team members, Itinerary, Gear List, Transport list, Sleeping arrangements and other details
4.35pm Teams do their own warm up over 1km lap
4.45pm Year 5 (and under) and Year 6 Race - Boys and Girls 2km (2 laps)
4.55pm Year 7 and 8 Race 3km (3 laps)
5.10pm Warm Down
Please try to make it to this event. IT DOESN'T MATTER where you come in this race but use it as a practice for a week later -ie prepare for it in the same way with no food for 3 hours, warm up etc. and wear shoes and gear you will at Hanmer. Try your race tactics out etc.

Another event that would be ideal to attend as a lead up to 23 September is......

7. SUNDAY 19 September: Marylands Children's Relay 19.9.10 (Not an official PSC Training event but well worth having a go!))
Everyone is invited to run in this 4 x 1km relay at 1.00pm at Marylands Reserve. No need to be with a running club and it is all on grass and a great opportunity for a blow out over 1km with your spikes before resting up.

If you would like to run (and are not already running in a club team), please fill in the below form by SUNDAY 12 SEPTEMBER - anyone can run, no need to be registered or a club member. I will put you in a team. See this form:

CHILDREN'S RELAY ENTRY FORM SUNDAY 19.9.10

That's all for now. Do keep safe and do try to get out for a run if you can but I understand if you can't. Attached is a photo of part of Castle Rock that fell off on Saturday morning...I ran past it yesterday and it is huge..glad it didn't come down any further towards my house!

See some of you on Saturday or next Thursday.

PSC CC Team News 23.8.10

Hi everyone
ONE MONTH TODAY TILL IRXC2010!!!!

Great to see 69 out of the 83 team members out at Southbrook Park in Rangiora today. There was some huffing and puffing today as we moved into some speed sessions and sprints of 50-200metres over a flat but fairly slippery course around the perimeter of the park. Lots of you looked good in your new jackets and shorts and I'm sure they made you even faster. We have some very quick runners around with the Moulai boys, Tom and Nick, both showing some super speed. Well done to the winning relay team of 2 x Moulai with Cameron Bartlett who smoked the competition.

Team members were busy in the weekend with the Canterbury Road Champs at Spencer Park on Saturday ( well done to our Canterbury Champs ) and then the NZ Duathlon Champs on Sunday at Halswell...well done to Cam Avery who backed up a Bronze at the Road Champs then did an individual Duathlon the next day with some very good running and also Rainer Pye who competed in both full events...Ari also ran the next day after winning her Canterbury Road title....Sabine Keenan took Bronze in the Year 8 girls and Jayden Beckett Silver and Callum Long Bronze in the Year 7 boys at the Duathlon.

Thanks to all club runners grade Grade 11+ who entered the NZ Road Champs on September 4 - should be a good blow out for you all. Everyone else should run in the "Fun Run" on the day....

PSC CC Team News 19.8.10

Hi everyone
FIVE WEEKS TODAY TILL IRXC2010!!!!

Great to see 71 out of the 83 team members out at Halswell today. You did some great work in wet conditions but I was very impressed with the way you went about your reps up the hill as teams and also the speed at which you attacked both high points of the Quarry - great stuff! The hill training has paid off and you all look very strong! From Monday we move into more speedwork and racing mode, having set a strong aerobic and hill base.

Please note that if you are in the 11-14 Age Grades and registered with a club, you have to the enter the NZ Road Championships on Saturday September 4th, by MIDNIGHT SUNDAY 22 AUGUST. For entries go to:
http://robo.co.nz/o/nzrc2010/ If you are in the Grade 10 and below or are not registered with a club and aged 11-14...you just need to turn up and pay your $2 on the day for a 2km "fun run".

1. JACKETS AND SHORTS READY FOR MONDAY...we have been told that the jackets and shorts will be ready tomorrow

PSC CC Team News 11.8.10

Hi everyone
Great to see 70 out of the 82 of the team at Barnett Park tonight with the Year 7 boys having a full turn out - well done boys and the Year 6 and 7 Girls and Year 5 and 6 Boys only having one missing. The track was great today and many of you are very fit as I can say it was the fastest we have ever made it up to the cave and with no big gaps either - well done to the heroes who did a second lap: Ari and Ella Harris for the girls, Zander and Callum Haughin and lots of the Year 8 boys - well done guys! Sophie discovered a very quick way down the hill - on her bottom and we didn't see a "hobo" in the cave but a few people tried out his shower!

1. Freddo Frog winners today were: (from memory - please let me know mistakes)
Year 5 Girls: Mya and Eden
Year 5 Boys: Iain and Mitchell
Year 6 Girls: Liberty and Zoe (great to meet Liberty today, all the way from Hinds!)
Year 6 Boys: Nick and Harrison
Year 7 Girls: Laura and Saskia
Year 7 Boys: Jayden and Jaiden-Lee
Year 8 Girls: Beanie (Sabine) and Libby
Year 8 Boys: - hadn't come back by the time I left - hopefully they still aren't out there!

2. (Non Compulsory) THIS SATURDAY 14 August - CHA 1km CHALLENGE meet 1.45pm for a 2.30pm time trial start at Bottle Lake Forest, Waitakiri Drive - go to the blue CHA ezi-up: EVERYONE WELCOME! To help with recording, if possible, sign up here by Friday: CHA 1km CHALLENGE
Your chance to win a Gold, Silver or Bronze Award depending on what time you can do for a 1km time trial on the road at Bottle Lake Forest - depends on your age on the day. Run 500m out and then 500m back. The standards are Internationally based and last year we had some super performances and many gold certificates handed out. Anyone is able to run, all ages and non club members welcome. For those not wanting to run a 1km, there is the forest tracks for a good training run too.

3. Training Requirements:
Just a reminder that to be part of the team you HAVE TO ATTEND 7 out of the 10 named training sessions/ races. A few of you have missed 2 out of the four so far, so please make sure you get to the rest. Last year we had to remove a runner from the team for not attending the required amount. A reminder it is a privilege to run for your province and our team is BY FAR the hardest Canterbury Representative team to make. All of you were given the training dates on either 16 or 30 June before you agreed to be team members. A big thanks to all of you who travel big distances and rearrange other commitments to get to training.

4. PORT HILLS UNDER 17 XC Results:
For those of you who ran on Saturday, click this link to get to the results: PORT HILLS RESULTS then click on 2010 results

5. NEXT TRAINING RUN: 4.30pm - 5.15pm Thursday 19 August @ Halswell Quarry
We will do some hill work and reps but we will not go too hard for those who have the Canterbury Road Championships on Saturday 21 August.

See you Saturday or next Thursday.
Cheers
Paul:)

Ports Hills XC and NZXC - Ari NZ Champ!

Hi all
Well done everyone on your racing today....60 of the team racing today at the Port Hills Under 17 Cross Country races with the Year 5, 6 and 7 Boys all having 9 runners there. It is great to have a race as part of your training as you will never run as fast in training that you can in a race...also a good chance to try some different tactics when the results don't matter too much, some of you were looking very good and the training is paying off...others are running themselves into form and others are coming back after injuries.... and many others raced from sports in the morning to race...we will let you know when results are out...I have a few certificates to hand out on Wednesday too.....

Congratulations to ARI GRAHAM (Year 7 Girls - pictured winning at Waikanae by David Eglesfield) who won the G12 New Zealand Cross Country Championships in Waikanae, Wellington today - a fantastic effort! Fergus Eglesfield (Year 8 Boys) was 4th and Angus Bailey (Year 7 Boys) was 6th in the B12 race with Fergus only 13 seconds off the winner. Ella Harris (Year 7 Girls) was second Senior Women on handicap in the Governor's Bay to Lyttelton 10k Handicap Road Race this morning in about 41.40.

See you Wednesday at Barnett Park, 4.30pm.
Cheers
Paul:)

PSC CC Team News 26.7.10

Hi guys
1. TRAINING AT ROTO KOHATU TONIGHT:
Wow, what a great training session tonight with 73 of the team there and many others as well - well over 100 in total. Well done to the Year 5 Girls and the Year 7 Girls who had 100% attendance! It was a tough session and you should be tired! Especially those who competed in the Canterbury Cross Country Championships on Saturday. Don't worry if you couldn't keep up with all your team mates, it is about YOU and how you are training and how much effort YOU put in. I know the Year 5 boys all put in a big effort, as I was making sure they were all training their best (from behind most of the time!). Training at this time should be tiring and tough, and you will grow in strength and endurance for that later part of your race later in the term.

Well done to our AWESOME EFFORT AWARD WINNERS:
Year 5 Boys: LOGAN ANDERSON
Year 5 Girls: LOUISE DALY
Year 6 Boys: BEN MARSHALL-LEE
Year 6 Girls: HARRIET BUSH
Year 7 Boys: TOM MOULAI
Year 7 Girls: DOMINIQUE HEATH
Year 8 Boys: "JOEY" DWYER
Year 8 Girls: MAIRI LAW

A special thanks to all parents who helped out and the CHRISTCHURCH AVON older Juniors who led the groups including World Schools' Cross Country Champion, Margot Gibson.

2. CANTERBURY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS:
An excellent effort from all of our athletes who ran (skidded and swam!) at Halswell on Saturday...Canterbury titles going to
B10: Byron Heath
G10: Lorna Pairman
B11: Harrison Brown
G11: Ari Graham (beat the G12, 13 and 14 girls too!)
B12: Fergus Eglesfield
G12: Jesse Anderson
The G13, B13, G14, B14, M16 and W16 winners were all past PSC CC Team members too! Well done to Jessica, Sean, Annie, Daniel, Zac and Lydia.

PHIL COSTLEY won his 103rd representative (Provincial and National) title when he easily won the Senior Race. We race for the PHIL COSTLEY Shield at Hanmer. Phil has confirmed he will be coming to the IRXC2010 at Hanmer and is even keen to come to the Canterbury Awards Dinner. (if he can get a ticket!......I actually put him on the list way before we were booked out thankfully!)

3. OTAGO INTEREST:
The Otago Primary Schools Sports Association sounds keen on the IRXC2010...hopefully they will send some runners and even some teams. They have their school champs on September 10th so will be in top form for 23 September.....

4. UNIFORMS:
If you need to change your singlet, I will bring them along next Tuesday to Woodend. All jacket and shorts orders have been sent through and hopefully the polo shirts will be ready soon...will let you know....

5. NEXT TEAM TRAINING RUN - Tuesday 3 August at Woodend Beach Domain:
Travel on the Northern Motorway and the Main North Road and turn right into Woodend Beach Rd (after Sandhills Road on your right) just before the Woodend Tavern, do not go into Woodend township. Travel right to the end of this road, past the Woodend Christian Camp on your left, to the road end. There is a car park at the Domain. We will do some hill work (hill springing) on the sand dunes and the beach as well as a run in the forest. Playgrounds available for the little ones and bring your thermos if you need coffee

Keep that training up this week and all the best to those running in the PTH U16 Road Relay on Saturday.
Cheers
Paul:)
